The Japanese major leagues have long been considered the highest quality professional circuits outside of the United States. The Dominican Republic held its first islandwide championship tournament in 1912. While baseball is widely played in Canada and many minor league teams have been based in the country, the American major leagues did not include a Canadian club until 1969, when the Montreal Expos joined the National League as an expansion team. In 2007, Bonds became MLB’s all-time home run leader, surpassing Hank Aaron, as total major league and minor league attendance both reached all-time highs.

Baseball was considered a national pastime in the Philippines in the 1960s and 70s, but the sport has since declined in popularity. The sport’s overall popularity in Latin America has assisted in integrating Latin American migrants to the United States. With the rise in popularity of other team sports with much higher average ticket prices—football, basketball, and hockey—professional baseball had become among the most popular blue-collar-oriented American spectator sports.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it was common for baseball players to achieve 40 or 50 home runs in a season, a remarkable accomplishment that even in the 1980s was deemed unusual. The Pittsburgh drug trials occurred in 1985, involving players who were summoned to testify about cocaine trafficking before a grand jury in Pittsburgh. With his 4,192nd hit, Pete Rose set a new record for all-time hits previously held by Ty Cobb in 1985. Throughout the decade, a decline in home runs was evident, as players managed to hit 40 home runs only 13 times and for the first time since the dead-ball era (1900–1919), no player exceeded 50 home runs in a season.

The fair territory between home plate and the outfield boundary is baseball’s field of play, though significant events can take place in foul territory, as well. Fielding and pitching

Shortly after the war, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier. MLB rose in popularity in the decade following the Black Sox Scandal, and unlike major leagues in other sports, it endured the Great Depression and World War II without any of its teams folding. By the 1890s, calls were made to follow the success of other working class sports (like Rugby in Wales and Soccer in Merseyside) and adopt a distinct set of rules and bureaucracy. The Confédération Européene de Baseball (European Baseball Confederation), founded in 1953, organizes a number of competitions between clubs from different countries. Other European countries have seen professional leagues; the most successful, other than the Dutch league, is the Italian league, founded in 1948. After World War II, professional leagues were founded in many Latin American countries, most prominently Venezuela (1946) and the Dominican Republic (1955).

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major leagues in 1947 when he made his debut with the Dodgers. The National Agreement, established in 1903, created a formal relationship among the two major leagues and the National Association of Professional Base Ball Leagues, which represented the majority of the nation’s minor professional leagues. To better assess plays like attempted force outs and tag outs, more umpires might be positioned near other bases. Rules in children’s games, such as those in Little League, tend to be more flexible, allowing for players to re-enter the same game as substitutes.

Individuals such as Pete Gray, who played as a one-armed outfielder, were given opportunities to rise to the major leagues. The start of World War II led to a depletion of professional baseball players since over 500 men departed from MLB teams to join the military. The introduction of the foul strike rule, first in the NL in 1901 and the AL two years later, swiftly transformed baseball from a high-scoring affair to one where scoring became a challenge.
